February 18, 2025
The Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD) has signed a cooperation programme with Vulcan Green Steel (VGS), a subsidiary of Jindal Steel Group, to fund the construction of a camel racing track in Duqm as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiatives.
The cooperation programme was signed by Eng. Ahmed bin Ali Akaak, CEO of SEZAD, and Yousuf Al Reesi, Corporate Affairs General Manager at VGS.
The construction of the camel racing track follows the allocation of a 4.8 million square metre plot by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, with the track extending approximately six kilometres.
Eng. Akaak stated that establishing the camel racing track in Duqm aligns with the zone’s efforts, along with its operating companies, to enhance services for the local community.
In a press statement following the signing of the cooperation programme, he added, “Duqm and its neighbouring wilayats are known for breeding purebred Omani camels. We are working in collaboration with companies operating in the zone to support camel owners in practising this tradition.” He also noted that the camel racing track aims to promote the sport and strengthen Duqm’s capabilities in hosting local sporting events.
According to the cooperation programme, VGS will fund the construction of the track with an investment of RO 350,000. Al Reesi stated that the company’s contribution to funding the construction of the camel racing track in Duqm reflects its commitment to supporting various programmes and events that benefit the local community in SEZAD.
He added, “Camel racing is one of the most prominent traditional sports in the Sultanate of Oman. Recognising its significance, Jindal is working in collaboration with SEZAD to create an enabling environment to encourage this sport.” He further noted that the track would be a valuable addition to all wilayats of Al Wusta Governorate, not just Duqm.
According to the cooperation programme, the camel racing track will be constructed in accordance with the specifications set by the Oman Camel Racing Federation. The project includes the installation of side barriers along the track, made of either iron or aluminium, or entirely of iron. Additionally, seven starting zones will be developed, adhering to the federation’s standards. The project will also feature the installation of signboards along the track to indicate various race distances, the construction of race officials’ towers for competition recording, and the development of a concrete barrier to control dust and airborne debris. Moreover, spectator stands will be built alongside a dedicated platform for VIP guests.
The establishment of the camel racing track comes at a time when SEZAD is witnessing significant sporting activity and an increasing capability to host and organise both local and international events. The track is expected to contribute to the revitalisation of camel racing in Duqm and enhance its presence in local and regional racing competitions.
