Industry Partnership Forum to Strengthen Education Aligned with Labour Market Needs

October 20, 2026

Duqm University College today organised an Industry Partnership Forum under the theme “Work-Based Learning” at the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD). The forum aimed to strengthen cooperation between academic institutions and the economic and industrial sectors, and to introduce an innovative educational model that connects academic study with practical application in real workplace settings.

The forum coincides with the commencement of operations at Duqm University College, the first higher education institution in Al Wusta Governorate. Its establishment aims to strengthen higher education provision in the area, develop qualified Omani talent to meet labour market needs, and keep pace with the rapid economic and investment growth taking place in SEZAD.

The forum highlighted the work-based learning model adopted by the college as a pioneering educational approach and the first of its kind in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to offer bachelor’s degree programmes in which training and learning in real workplace settings form the primary study pathway, alongside academic instruction on campus.

This model aims to develop an integrated educational framework in partnership with institutions and companies operating across various economic sectors. It enables students to gain professional experience during their studies, apply theoretical knowledge to practical challenges, develop innovation and problem-solving skills, and enhance their readiness to enter the labour market upon graduation.

The forum sought to strengthen partnerships between the college and public and private sector institutions, explore opportunities to provide learning and training environments for students, and align academic programmes with the actual needs of economic sectors, particularly the industrial, logistics and service sectors, which continue to grow in SEZAD.

In its initial phase, Duqm University College offers two academic programmes in partnership with Coventry University in the United Kingdom: a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Digital and Technology Solutions, and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Business Management and Leadership. These programmes form part of the college’s efforts to offer specialisations aligned with economic development requirements, technological transformation and labour market needs.

The establishment of Duqm University College represents a significant addition to educational services in SEZAD, amid the expansion of industrial, logistics and investment projects and the growing demand for specialised talent. It also strengthens the integration of economic and social development in Al Wusta Governorate.

The forum forms part of the college’s efforts to build sustainable partnerships with institutions and companies operating within and beyond SEZAD. These efforts align with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 to develop education, empower young people, improve the alignment of educational outcomes with labour market requirements, and provide the national economy with qualified talent equipped with both knowledge and practical experience.
